Nigeria Customs Raises Alarm Over Fake Car Auctions on Social Media
The Nigeria Customs Service has issued a fresh warning to the public about scam artists running fake automobile auctions online.
These fraudsters are using social media to trick people into thinking they can buy seized or cheap vehicles directly from the government.
Officials say the scams are growing fast and are designed to steal money from unsuspecting buyers.
The scammers have created fake accounts that look official. They post pictures and messages claiming to sell cars at very low prices through special auctions. In one case, they are using the photo of a real Customs officer who has nothing to do with vehicle sales. The service has made it clear that these posts are completely false and were never approved by them.
Customs stressed that no genuine auction is being advertised this way. They explained that the officer whose image is being misused is not involved in any car sales on social media. The whole thing is simply an act of impersonation meant to cheat members of the public out of their hard-earned money.
The service is urging everyone to ignore such messages and never send money to these accounts. Instead, people should only use the official and verified channels of the Nigeria Customs Service for any real information about auctions or vehicle sales. They also asked the public to report the fake accounts so that action can be taken against the scammers.
This latest alert comes after a similar warning issued just last week. Officials noted that more and more impersonation cases are targeting government agencies, especially around popular items like seized vehicles.
The scams take advantage of people’s interest in getting good deals on cars.
For now, Customs is asking Nigerians to stay alert and careful when seeing any deal that looks too good to be true online. By following the advice and sticking to trusted sources, the public can avoid falling victim to these growing internet frauds.
