CNG Bus Explosion Rocks Kaduna Terminus, Raises Safety Concerns
An explosion involving a compressed natural gas (CNG)-powered bus has caused panic at a major transport hub in Kaduna, raising fresh concerns over the safety of alternative fuel vehicles in the country.
The incident occurred on Sunday at the busy Lagos Garage Terminus in the Mando area, where commuters and traders were going about their daily activities. Eyewitnesses reported hearing a loud blast before discovering that a luxury bus had been severely damaged, with parts of the vehicle scattered across the terminal.
Emergency responders arrived promptly at the scene to manage the situation and secure the area. Fortunately, no casualties were recorded at the time of filing this report, a development many described as a narrow escape given the high human traffic typically associated with the terminus.
Authorities have yet to confirm the exact cause of the explosion. However, preliminary indications suggest that it may be linked to technical or safety issues related to the CNG system installed in the vehicle. Investigations are ongoing to determine whether factors such as poor maintenance, faulty installation, or regulatory lapses played a role.
The incident comes at a time when Nigeria is actively promoting the use of compressed natural gas as a cheaper and cleaner alternative to petrol and diesel, particularly in the transportation sector. The Federal Government has in recent months encouraged mass adoption of CNG-powered vehicles as part of efforts to reduce fuel costs and dependence on imported petroleum products. However, the Kaduna explosion is expected to heighten public concern about the safety of the initiative.
Experts have warned that without strict enforcement of safety standards, proper vehicle conversion processes, and regular inspections, the widespread adoption of CNG technology could pose significant risks.
Regulatory agencies are now likely to face increased pressure to strengthen oversight and ensure compliance with safety protocols across the country.
The explosion adds to growing concerns about gas-related incidents nationwide, underscoring the urgent need for improved safety measures as Nigeria transitions toward alternative energy solutions.
