NPFL Golden Boot Race: Obaje, Arumala Locked in Dead Heat as Season Enters Final Stretch
With only six matchdays left in the 2025/26 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season, the battle for the Eunisell Golden Boot has reached a fever pitch.
Veteran striker Godwin Obaje and breakout star Joseph Arumala are currently leading the pack, setting the stage for one of the tightest individual finishes in recent league history.
As of early April 2026, both Obaje (Enugu Rangers) and Arumala (Ikorodu City) sit atop the scoring charts with 11 goals each. While the title race sees Rivers United and Rangers International fighting for the trophy, the “race within the race” for the league’s top marksman is drawing equal attention from fans across the country.
Godwin Obaje (Enugu Rangers): A seasoned campaigner in the Nigerian top flight, Obaje is hunting for another Golden Boot to add to his storied career. His 11 goals have been instrumental in keeping Rangers in the hunt for a consecutive league title.
Joseph Arumala (Ikorodu City): The Ikorodu City winger has been the revelation of the season. Transitioning from the creative flanks to a lethal finishing role, Arumala’s 11 goals have powered the Lagos-based side into a surprising top-three position.
Both players are also tied in overall goal contributions, having recorded two assists apiece alongside their 11 strikes.
The race is far from a two-horse sprint. Four players are currently breathing down the leaders’ necks, each sitting on 10 goals:
Victor Mbaoma of Remo Stars, Daddy Abdulrahman of El Kanemi Warriors, Uche Collins of Katsina United and Emeka Obioma of Abia Warriors.
“The level of finishing this season has been exceptional,” noted one NPFL analyst. “Having six players within one goal of each other with six games left is a testament to the attacking quality currently in the league.”
While Obaje and Arumala lead, Victor Mbaoma of Remo Stars is arguably the most dangerous “dark horse.” Despite missing a significant portion of the early season due to a rib injury, Mbaoma has reached double digits in just 23 matches. Conversely, Abia Warriors’ Emeka Obioma remains a pure finisher; he is the only player in the top six yet to record an assist this season, highlighting his role as a traditional “number nine.”
With 18 points still left to play for, the chasing pack including Temitope Vincent Adebayo (9 goals) and Sodiq Ibrahim (9 goals) remains within striking distance.
As the league enters its decisive phase, every goal scored will not only impact the NPFL table where Rivers United currently holds a slim lead over Rangers but will also determine who walks away with the prestigious Golden Boot and the multi-million naira prize that often accompanies it.
