First Lady Oluremi Tinubu to Grace Closing Ceremony of Abuja 3rd National Para Games

The third edition of the National Para Games is set for a grand finale today, April 3, 2026, as Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, arrives at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium to officially close the week-long event.

The National Sports Commission (NSC) confirmed on Thursday that the First Lady will serve as the Special Guest of Honour for the ceremony, which is scheduled to take place inside the stadium’s main bowl.

Her presence is seen as a major endorsement of the “Renewed Hope” mandate’s commitment to sports inclusivity and the empowerment of persons living with disabilities

The 2026 Games, which kicked off on March 26, brought together over 1,000 athletes representing 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory. Competing across 15 different para-sports, including para-powerlifting, para-table tennis, and para-taekwondo, the athletes have spent the last nine days shattering records and demonstrating extraordinary athleticism.

In a statement issued through the NSC, the First Lady was described as a “long-standing advocate and supporter” of para-sports.

“Her presence is expected to provide a fitting climax to what has been a highly successful tournament,” the NSC stated. “Senator Tinubu has consistently championed the inclusion of para-athletes, using her platform to promote opportunities and national recognition for their achievements.”

As the curtains draw to a close, several states have already made their mark on the medals table:

Host City Dominance: The FCT contingent has maintained a strong showing in para-athletics and swimming.

Kogi’s Debut: Kogi State recorded a successful maiden outing, bagging three medals in rifle shooting and para-powerlifting.

World-Class Standards: Several athletes used these games as a preparation ground for upcoming international qualifiers, maintaining the high standards that have made Nigeria a global powerhouse in Paralympic sports.

The First Lady’s involvement follows President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s opening remarks earlier in the week, where he described the athletes as the “epitome of the enduring Nigerian fighting spirit.”

Beyond the medals, the 2026 National Para Games have focused on improving the welfare of athletes. The First Lady is expected to deliver a keynote address during the ceremony, likely touching on future investments in para-sports infrastructure and funding for athletes representing Nigeria on the global stage.

The ceremony will feature a parade of the participating states, cultural displays, and the official trophy presentations for the overall winning state.

Venue: Main Bowl, Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja.

Date: Friday, April 3, 2026.

Key Attendees: First Lady Oluremi Tinubu, Chairman of the National Sports Commission Mallam Shehu Dikko, and various state governors.

With the conclusion of these games, the focus now shifts to the international circuit, where many of today’s champions will look to carry the Nigerian flag at the next Paralympic qualifiers.
