Onuachu Breaks Into European Golden Shoe Top 10
Nigeria’s Paul Onuachu has officially entered the race for the most prestigious individual scoring award in European football.
The 31-year-old giant has been the focal point of Trabzonspor’s attack this season, maintaining a goalscoring rate that has defied the league coefficient disadvantage.
Onuachu currently sits in 10th place in the rankings. While he has physically scored more goals than many players ranked above him, the Golden Shoe uses a weighted system based on league difficulty.
Because the Turkish Süper Lig is ranked outside the top five European leagues, each of Onuachu’s goals is multiplied by 1.5. In contrast, strikers in the Premier League, La Liga, or Bundesliga receive a 2.0 multiplier per goal.
Onuachu faces stiff competition from established superstars. Harry Kane currently leads the pack with a massive 62 points, nearly double the Nigerian’s tally.
The summit of the leaderboard is currently dominated by Harry Kane, who is enjoying a historic season at Bayern Munich. The England captain leads the race with 31 goals, which translates to a massive 62 points.
Trailing the leader is Kylian Mbappé, who has adapted seamlessly to life at Real Madrid, tallying 23 goals for 46 points. He is closely followed by Manchester City’s Erling Haaland, who sits on 22 goals and 44 points. In fourth place, the surprise package of the Premier League, Igor Thiago of Brentford, has notched 19 goals to earn 38 points.
The middle of the pack features a tight battle between Mallorca’s Vedat Muriqi and Stuttgart’s Deniz Undav, both of whom have scored 18 goals for 36 points. They are pursued by Strasbourg’s young star Joaquín Panichelli, whose 16 goals in Ligue 1 have earned him 32 points. Just ahead of Onuachu by the narrowest of margins are Mason Greenwood and Luis Díaz, both sitting on 15 goals and 30 points due to their respective leagues’ higher weightings.
Onuachu’s rise is fueled by an incredible efficiency in front of goal, having netted his 21 league goals in just 24 appearances. His current form makes him the highest-ranking African player in the Golden Shoe race, leapfrogging superstars like Mohamed Salah and Serhou Guirassy.
To break further into the top five, Onuachu will need to maintain his elite strike rate to offset the coefficient gap, but his presence in the top 10 is already being hailed as a historic milestone for a player in the Turkish top flight.
