Tottenham Hotspur Hires Italian Coach De Zerbi

Tottenham Hotspur have officially appointed Roberto De Zerbi as their new Men’s Head Coach.

The Italian tactician, known for his high-risk, high-reward style of possession football, has signed a lucrative five-year contract that will keep him at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium until 2031.

The appointment comes at a moment of unprecedented crisis for the North London club. Currently languishing in 17th place, just one point above the relegation zone, Spurs are facing the very real threat of dropping out of the top flight for the first time since 1978.

De Zerbi becomes Tottenham’s third manager of a chaotic 2025/26 campaign. He replaces interim boss Igor Tudor, whose seven-game tenure saw the club crash out of the Champions League and slide further toward the abyss.

While De Zerbi was reportedly the “number one target” for a summer rebuild, Sporting Director Johan Lange admitted the club’s precarious league position forced their hand early.

“Roberto is one of the most creative and forward-thinking coaches in world football,” Lange stated. “We are very pleased to be able to bring him in now to help us achieve our short-term priority.”

The task for the former Brighton and Marseille boss is gargantuan. Tottenham are currently enduring a 13-game winless run their joint second-longest in history and have yet to record a Premier League victory in 2026.

Despite the looming threat of the Championship, the length of De Zerbi’s deal suggests a long-term commitment from both parties. Reports indicate there is no relegation break clause in the contract, meaning De Zerbi is expected to lead the project regardless of which division the club finds itself in next season.

“I am delighted to be joining this fantastic football club,” De Zerbi said in his first official address to the fans. “I am here because I believe in the ambition of the leadership. Our short-term priority is to climb the table, and that will be our complete focus until the final whistle of the season.”

The appointment hasn’t been met with universal acclaim. While many fans are excited by the prospect of “De Zerbi-ball” returning to England recalling his success in leading Brighton to their highest ever finish others are wary of his track record for short tenures. Having recently left Marseille after a disappointing Champions League exit and a heavy defeat to PSG, the pressure is on the Italian to prove he can provide the stability Spurs so desperately crave.

All eyes now turn to the Stadium of Light on April 11, where De Zerbi will begin his mission to steer the Tottenham ship away from the rocks.
