ADC Insists on Congresses, Convention Despite Uncertainty Over INEC Presence

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has reaffirmed its decision to proceed with its scheduled congresses and national convention, regardless of the attendance of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, made this known while addressing concerns over INEC’s involvement in the exercise. "We will go ahead with our congresses. We have given INEC 21 days’ notice, they have accepted.

Whether they come or not, we will continue with our congresses and our convention,” Abdullahi stated. The statement comes amid growing attention on internal party activities as political parties begin early preparations ahead of the 2027 general elections.

According to the ADC, it has complied with the provisions of the Electoral Act by duly notifying INEC of its planned congresses within the required timeframe.

The party maintained that while INEC’s presence is expected as part of its oversight role, it is not a condition for proceeding with internal processes.

The ADC is expected to conduct its ward, local government, and state congresses in phases, culminating in a national convention where key party decisions, including leadership positions, may be finalized.

As the political landscape gradually shapes ahead of 2027, the party’s stance could set the stage for broader debates on the extent of INEC’s supervisory role in party activities and the autonomy of political parties in Nigeria.
