Operations at the temporary Terminal 3 (T3) of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport were briefly disrupted on Wednesday following an electrical spark that caused smoke within the facility, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria has confirmed.
In a statement issued by the authority, the incident occurred at about 14:05 hours in one of the terminal’s operational offices, triggering smoke emission and prompting an immediate safety response.
FAAN said the situation was swiftly brought under control by personnel of its Aerodrome Rescue and Firefighting Services (ARFFS), who responded promptly to contain the incident and prevent escalation.
“As a precautionary measure, the temporary Terminal 3 was shut down briefly to allow for safety checks and necessary interventions,” the statement said.
The authority added that ongoing electrical maintenance is being carried out to ensure all systems are functioning optimally before the terminal is reopened for normal operations.
In the meantime, all flight operations originally scheduled for Terminal 3 have been redirected to Terminal 2 of the airport to minimise disruption for passengers and airlines.
FAAN reassured the public that there was no major damage recorded and no casualties reported, emphasising that safety remains its top priority.
The agency also urged passengers and airport users to remain calm and comply with directives from aviation and security officials as efforts continue to restore full operations at the terminal.
The incident highlights the importance of rapid emergency response systems within critical infrastructure, as authorities work to maintain safety and operational efficiency at one of Nigeria’s busiest aviation hubs.
