President Bola Tinubu has announced the donation of all his salaries since assuming office in May 2023 to support wounded soldiers and the families of fallen heroes on his 74th birthday.
The President directed the Accountant-General of the Federation to immediately establish a dedicated special account to house these funds, which will serve as seed money for a new military welfare initiative.
This fund is designed to provide targeted financial assistance to injured service members, as well as the widows, widowers, and children of personnel who lost their lives defending Nigeria’s peace and security.
Tinubu emphasized that this support is a “solemn national obligation” rather than an act of charity, and it will operate independently of existing military insurance or standard welfare programs.
Beyond his personal contribution, the President called on state governors, National Assembly members, and the private sector to contribute to the fund to ensure its long-term sustainability for veterans.
The announcement was made during a subdued birthday celebration, where the President also expressed optimism about Nigeria’s future, noting that his administration’s reforms are starting to show a “glimmer of light.”
