The Students’ Union Government (SUG) of Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU) has accused the Nigeria Police Force of assaulting student leaders and firing live ammunition at unarmed students in Ogun State.
The conflict began at the Oru-Ijebu Police Division after the SUG Legal Director went to the station to investigate the “questionable” arrest of several students.
Upon arrival, the Legal Director was allegedly subjected to degrading treatment, including being physically assaulted, kicked, and violently choked by police officers.
When the SUG President and other leaders arrived to peacefully de-escalate the tension, the police reportedly responded with reckless violence and opened fire.
One student was shot in the hand during the chaos, while several others were brutalized and unlawfully detained by the officers at the scene.
The Ogun State Police Command initially denied the allegations, claiming through a spokesperson that no students were detained or harmed during the confrontation.
The Students’ Union has demanded an immediate investigation, the prosecution of the involved officers, and compensation for the injured students to ensure justice is served.
