HURIWA Demands DSS Arrest Sunday Igboho Over Political Threats

Human Rights Writers Association,
HURIWA, has urged the DSS to arrest or invite Yoruba Nation activist Sunday Igboho for questioning.Â
This follows recent public statements seen as a threat to national peace and political stability.
The group’s demand stems from a viral video where Igboho allegedly warned opposition figures against campaigning in the South-West. He specifically named prominent leaders Peter Obi and Atiku Abubakar in his warning.
HURIWA National Coordinator, Emmanuel Onwubiko described the comments as dangerous and unlawful. The association argued that such rhetoric incites violence and poses a direct threat to Nigeria’s democratic process.
The group emphasized that the Nigerian Constitution guarantees all citizens the right to move and associate freely. They insisted that no individual has the legal authority to restrict political activities in any region.
HURIWA noted that these threats mirror the intimidation witnessed during the 2023 elections. They warned that failing to address this behavior encourages ethnic hostility and political suppression in the South-West.
The association expressed concern that ignoring such threats could normalize political violence. They argued that legal inaction undermines the rule of law and creates a culture of impunity for influential figures.
HURIWA also criticized inflammatory rhetoric from certain government officials, claiming it emboldens agitators. They warned that this climate of intolerance could destabilize the country ahead of the 2027 elections.
Security agencies, including the Police and DSS, were urged to act swiftly to prevent an escalation. HURIWA demanded a thorough investigation to ensure those making threats are held accountable.
Lastly, the group called on President Tinubu to publicly denounce these divisive comments. They stressed that the government must ensure a safe and inclusive political environment for all Nigerians.
