Governor Bassey Otu of Cross River State has officially launched a free transport scheme to assist residents during the Easter festivities.
This initiative, tagged the “Season of Sweetness,” is a direct response to the rising costs of transportation caused by high fuel prices.
The program was flagged off on Monday in Calabar, covering major routes within the capital city and extending to several surrounding local government areas. It aims to ease the financial burden on citizens while fostering social ties and boosting local commercial activities during the holiday.
Coordinated by the Special Adviser on General Duties, Ekpenyong Akiba, the scheme has been hailed as a timely intervention. Officials noted that the service is designed to ensure that the hike in transport fares does not prevent families from connecting or celebrating.
Residents and traders have expressed deep appreciation for the gesture, noting that the savings on daily commutes provide significant relief. Many commuters at commercial hubs like Watt Market highlighted how the policy directly impacts their daily household expenses.
One resident, Imaobong Bassey, lauded the Governor’s empathy toward the citizens’ current economic struggles. She stated, “Governor Bassey Otu is a listening governor and we thank God for a kind of person who pays attention to the plight of the people. This initiative is a timely intervention, and we are happy.”
This free bus service has become a recurring feature of the current administration during major holidays. By cushioning the effects of economic hardship, the state government continues to draw praise for prioritizing the welfare of the people through accessible mobility.
