The Nigerian Navy has announced the killing of two suspected improvised explosive device (IED) specialists linked to the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), during a clearance operation in Imo State.
The operation, carried out by the Naval Base Oguta Tactical Patrol Squadron, took place in Orsu Local Government Area as part of a joint security effort targeting suspected IPOB/ESN hideouts.
In a statement issued on Sunday, Naval spokesperson Abiodun Folorunsho said the mission covered the Orsu-Ihiteukwa axis, including the Mother Valley general area, known for suspected militant activities.
According to the Navy, troops encountered multiple improvised explosive devices during the operation, confirming the presence of an active IED network in the area.
“Subsequent exploitation led to the discovery of an IED-making facility, where naval personnel executed a coordinated ambush, neutralising two IED specialists,” the statement said.
The Navy added that the operation led to the destruction of explosives and dismantling of the facility, dealing a significant blow to the group’s operational capabilities.
The clearance mission forms part of ongoing efforts by security agencies to curb violent activities and restore stability in the South-East region, where attacks on security personnel and public infrastructure have been reported in recent years.
Authorities say operations will continue in identified hotspots to dismantle criminal networks and ensure the safety of residents.
