MTN CHAMPS, Key Platform for Youth Athletics Development
The Nigeria School Sports Federation and other stakeholders have commended the organisers of MTN CHAMPS Season 4 following the successful conclusion of its second leg in Jos, Plateau State.
The three-day event, held from March 26 to 28 at the New Jos Stadium, featured more than 1,300 athletes representing 148 secondary schools and teams competing in various track and field events.
Speaking at the closing ceremony, officials of the federation and the Athletic Coaches Association of Nigeria praised the initiative for its role in discovering and developing young athletic talents, particularly from underserved communities.
They also acknowledged the contributions of teachers and Games Masters in nurturing the athletes.
Stakeholders described the competition as a major pathway for young athletes to progress to higher levels, noting its scale and impact on sports development in Nigeria and across Africa.
The Chief Customer Experience and Relations Officer of MTN Nigeria, Ngonwa Nwoye, said the event showcased exceptional talent, resilience and professionalism among participants. She noted that many athletes recorded personal bests despite challenging weather conditions, while organisers ensured smooth coordination throughout the competition.
Nwoye added that the programme continues to reflect MTN’s long-term commitment to youth development, expressing optimism for broader participation as the competition moves to its final stage.
This year’s edition also featured enhanced prize incentives, with cash rewards for both individual athletes and participating schools across various categories.
Among standout performances were a new national under-20 record in the junior 100 metres event and a season-best performance in the women’s 400 metres. Athletes representing Team MTN also secured multiple victories, including gold medals in key events.
Organisers noted that athletes identified through the initiative have already achieved success internationally, winning medals at global competitions and representing the country in relay events.
With the Jos leg concluded, the competition is set to continue in Ibadan, where the grand finale will take place.
