Otti Says He Won’t Oppose Tinubu’s 2027 Bid, Rules Out Defection

Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, on Friday said he would not stand against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 general elections, stating that he is not contesting for the presidency.

Speaking during his March media chat, the governor explained that it would be inappropriate for him to oppose the President’s re-election while he is also seeking a second term in office.

Otti’s remarks followed comments by Ginger Onwusibe, a member of the House of Representatives, who had earlier suggested that the governor would not challenge Tinubu’s candidacy.

The governor stressed that his position is not based on party affiliation but on what he described as a natural alignment within the structure of government, noting that federal, state and local governments operate as one system.

He added that while disagreements may arise at forums such as the National Economic Council, decisions reached must be respected in line with democratic principles.

Otti also criticised what he described as attempts by some individuals to create unnecessary political tension, attributing such actions to personal interests rather than public good.

On speculation about a possible exit from the Labour Party, the governor dismissed the claims, saying the party’s internal crisis had been resolved by the Supreme Court of Nigeria.

He noted that the Independent National Electoral Commission had recognised the court’s decision, adding that the party has resumed activities, including membership registration and preparations for upcoming congresses and convention.

According to him, there is no basis for defection as the party is regaining stability and strength.
