Athletes Light Up Day One of MTN CHAMPS Continental Jos Relays

The opening day of the MTN CHAMPS Continental Relays Season 4 in Jos delivered thrilling performances as athletes battled for early dominance, with the 100m and 400m events taking centre stage at the New Jos Stadium.
Under cool and humid conditions, Esther Okon set the tone for the competition by claiming victory in the women’s 400m final. She powered to a Season’s Best of 53.61 seconds, holding off a strong challenge from Team MTN’s Toheebat Jimoh, who also posted an SB of 53.88 seconds. Miracle Uwem Donald completed the podium in 54.27 seconds.
In the men’s 400m heats, Team MTN’s Ezekiel Asuquo emerged as the fastest qualifier, clocking 47.43 seconds. He finished ahead of Mfoniso Frank (47.66s) and Pelumi Emmanuel (48.37s), setting up what promises to be a competitive final.
The Youth Girls’ 400m heats saw an outstanding run from Dynamic Kaduna’s Faustina Obi, who was the only athlete to dip below 56 seconds. She recorded a Personal Best of 55.73 seconds, comfortably ahead of Chioma Edet (57.09s) and Oluchi Ezeh (57.19s).
In the men’s junior category, Team MTN’s Michael Aniche continued his impressive form following his success in Calabar, leading the heats in 49.22 seconds. He was closely followed by teammate Prosper Ushie (49.86s) and Chinedu Victor (50.13s) of Coach Felix Foundation.
Team MTN athletes also dominated the Youth Girls’ 400m rankings, with Chizoba Onyemauwa, Patience Shepnan, and Calista Yunana posting the top three times, while Nuhu Bamiyan, Zikirullah Ibrahim, and Abudmalik Aliyu led the Boys’ division.
The women’s junior 100m is shaping up as one of the standout events of the competition. Chigozie Rosemary Nwankwo of NUT led the field with a wind-assisted Personal Best of 11.46 seconds. Defending champion Miracle Ezechukwu followed closely with 11.55 seconds, while MTN’s Lucy Nwankwo posted a Season’s Best of 11.84 seconds.
In the men’s 100m, Emmanuel Akolo, who previously dominated the Youth category in Calabar, stepped up to the junior ranks and currently leads with a time of 10.89 seconds. He is narrowly ahead of Alvin Onyeama (10.90s) and Abdulfatah Oduwole (10.99s).
Meanwhile, Okechukwu Ezeh headlined the senior men’s 100m heats with a Personal Best of 10.56 seconds, edging Okisamen Divine Favour (10.58s) and Kabiru Mohammed (10.62s).
With several athletes already posting personal and season-best performances, Day One has set a high standard for the rest of the competition, as anticipation builds for even more electrifying action in the coming days of the MTN CHAMPS Continental Relays in Jos.
