Security Tightened at Eagle Square as APC Gathers for National Convention

By Momodu Favour

Security has been significantly reinforced at Eagle Square as the All Progressives Congress (APC) finalises preparations for its 2026 National Convention, scheduled to commence on Friday, March 27.

The iconic venue in Abuja was a beehive of activities on Friday morning, with workers putting finishing touches on the elaborate setup.

The arena has been decorated in the APC’s official colours red, green, white, and blue while party flags flutter across the square under clear skies.

Designated areas for voting have been clearly mapped out, with pavilions arranged according to states to accommodate delegates expected from across the country. According to party officials, more than 8,000 delegates from the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory are anticipated to participate in the high-stakes gathering.

A heavy security presence has been deployed around the venue, with operatives from the Nigeria Police Force, Department of State Services (DSS), and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), alongside other paramilitary agencies, stationed at strategic points.

All access roads leading to Eagle Square have been barricaded, with vehicular movement restricted and diverted, forcing many commuters to trek to their destinations.

Members of the Convention Venue Committee, led by Dapo Abiodun, were seen inspecting facilities and overseeing last-minute arrangements to ensure readiness ahead of the event.

The convention is expected to draw top party leaders, including President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, state governors, ministers, and other key stakeholders.

The APC has indicated it will adopt a consensus approach during the convention, a move it says reflects unity and internal cohesion within the party.

Speaking ahead of the event, Mohammed Idris, Minister of Information and National Orientation and Co-Chairman of the convention’s Media and Publicity Committee, outlined the party’s preparedness and strategic communication plans.

He emphasised the need for collaboration among committee members to ensure smooth coordination and effective dissemination of information throughout the convention.

“A lot of sacrifice is expected from all, in line with the party’s vision for a united and disciplined approach to communicating to Nigerians,” Idris stated.

He further stressed the importance of maintaining internal democratic values, noting that the convention represents a critical milestone in the APC’s efforts to strengthen its structures and reinforce its commitment to democratic processes.

The two-day convention is expected to shape the party’s direction ahead of future political contests, while also serving as a platform to reaffirm unity among its members.
