Yusuf Retains Kwankwasiyya Red Cap Despite APC Defection
Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf has reassured supporters that he will continue wearing the Kwankwasiyya red cap despite his recent defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The clarification follows growing speculation over whether the governor would abandon the cap, widely recognised as a symbol of the Kwankwasiyya movement.
Concerns intensified after Yusuf was seen wearing a different outfit bearing the insignia of President Bola Tinubu during a public appearance in Yola, Adamawa State, prompting questions from supporters about a possible shift in political identity.
Responding to the development, the governor’s spokesperson, Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, said no directive had been issued for supporters to discard the red cap. He explained that the Yola appearance was a special event where attendees dressed in a coordinated manner.
According to him, any decision regarding the symbol would be communicated at the appropriate time.
The red cap is closely associated with the Kwankwasiyya movement led by Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, under whom Yusuf previously served.
Although the governor is no longer aligned with the movement’s core leadership, he has continued to wear the cap, which political observers say has grown into a broader cultural and political identity in Kano State.
The development has triggered debate among supporters, with some urging Yusuf to follow the path of former governor Abdullahi Ganduje, who dropped the cap after parting ways with Kwankwaso in 2018.
