UK Summons Iranian Envoy Over Alleged Espionage, Security Threats

The United Kingdom has summoned Iran’s ambassador to London, Seyed Ali Mousavi, over what it described as Tehran’s “reckless and destabilising actions” both within the country and abroad.

Blritain’s Foreign Office said the move followed the prosecution of two individuals accused of assisting an Iranian intelligence service under the National Security Act.

According to officials, the suspects, one an Iranian national and the other a dual Iranian-British citizen—were recently charged over alleged links to foreign intelligence operations.

Authorities said the case involves suspected surveillance activities targeting members and locations associated with the Jewish community in London, including a synagogue.

The prosecution told a London court that the defendants, identified as Nematollah Shahsavani, 40, and Alireza Farasati, 22, were believed to have engaged in activities that could support Iranian intelligence between July and August last year.

British security agencies, including MI5, alongside lawmakers, have repeatedly warned of increasing threats linked to Iran, particularly amid ongoing tensions involving the United States and Israel.

In a related development, police disclosed that another Iranian man and a Romanian woman were arrested for attempting to gain access to HM Naval Base Clyde in Scotland, a key military installation housing the UK’s nuclear submarine fleet.

The facility is home to Britain’s Trident nuclear deterrent system, which consists of submarines equipped with ballistic missiles.

Prosecutors later confirmed that the Iranian suspect had been released pending further investigation, while no immediate charges would be pursued against the Romanian national, although authorities said the case could be reopened if new evidence emerges.

The British government reiterated its commitment to national security, stating it would take necessary steps to counter any foreign threats.

Officials also expressed concern that the UK could face heightened risks due to its support for US operations, including permitting the use of British military bases, which the government maintains are for defensive purposes.
