Police Arrest Baruwa After Forceful Abuja Takeover of NURTW Secretariat
Police in Abuja on Monday arrested Tajudeen Baruwa following a forceful takeover of the national secretariat of the National Union of Road Transport Workers.
Baruwa was taken into custody hours after leading supporters to seize the union’s headquarters from a rival faction loyal to Musiliu Akinsanya, widely known as MC Oluomo.
The incident marks a fresh escalation in the leadership crisis that has divided the union, with tensions between the two factions intensifying since 2024.
Earlier in the day, Baruwa and his group reportedly moved into the secretariat and assumed control, displacing members aligned with Akinsanya before security operatives intervened.
The dispute stems from a contested leadership structure within the union.
While members elected Akinsanya as national president in November 2024, the matter later became the subject of legal proceedings.
A court ruling subsequently favoured Baruwa, further complicating the leadership tussle and setting the stage for the latest confrontation.
Monday’s developments highlight the deepening divisions within the union, as both camps continue to assert authority amid ongoing uncertainty over its leadership.
