Gunmen Attack Kwara Church, Abduct 13 Worshippers as 3 Rescued
The Kwara State Government has confirmed that three worshippers have been rescued following an early morning attack on a church in Omugo community, Ifelodun Local Government Area.
Gunmen reportedly stormed the ECWA church during Sunday service, abducting 13 congregants and causing panic among worshippers and residents in the area.
Security operatives, including the police, military personnel and forest guards, launched a pursuit of the attackers into surrounding forests, leading to the rescue of three victims.
A source within the Kwara South Joint Security Watch, who requested anonymity, disclosed that nine of the abducted worshippers remain in captivity. The source raised concerns about the proximity of the church to a military base, located less than two kilometres away, suggesting a possible lapse in security.
The source also noted that four individuals earlier kidnapped in the nearby Babanla community are still being held despite the payment of a N10 million ransom by residents.
Commissioner for Communications, Bolanle Olukoju, confirmed the incident and praised the joint efforts of security agencies and local vigilante groups in responding to the attack.
She said the state government has directed security operatives to intensify efforts to secure the release of the remaining victims and bring the perpetrators to justice.
Olukoju condemned the attack, describing it as unacceptable and assuring residents of the government’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property.
She also urged members of the public to remain alert and cooperate with security agencies, adding that ongoing operations in forested areas have begun to yield results in tackling criminal activities.
