The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has alerted Nigerians to a fraudulent online flyer claiming the launch of a free NIN data correction portal. 

The commission officially labeled the advertisement as fake and warned the public against falling victim to the scam.

In a statement on its official X account, NIMC urged citizens to avoid the unauthorized portal mentioned in the circulating flyer. It emphasized that all personal data modifications must be conducted exclusively through verified government channels to ensure security.

The fraudulent flyer, which trended on social media, illegally featured NIMC and Federal Government logos. It falsely claimed that a free portal had been opened by government directive to address a “high level of complaints” regarding record errors.

The scam offered corrections for names, gender, and dates of birth, but directed users to a suspicious “gvly.xyz” domain. This non-government website poses a significant risk for phishing and identity theft to unsuspecting individuals.

To stop the spread of misinformation, NIMC recirculated the deceptive image with a bold red “FAKE” stamp across it. This visual warning was intended to immediately signal that the information in the flyer is unauthorized and dangerous.

NIMC reminded the public that the only legitimate way to update National Identification Number records is through its official self-service portal at [https://selfservicemodification.nimc.gov.ng](https://selfservicemodification.nimc.gov.ng). Citizens are advised not to trust any third-party links for these sensitive services.
