On Tuesday, March 10, 2026, National Assembly leaders met President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa. This high-profile meeting occurred shortly after both legislative chambers resumed plenary following a brief recess.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio led the delegation, which included Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin and Speaker Tajudeen Abbas. Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu and Governor Hope Uzodimma were also present for the afternoon visit.
The leaders spent approximately 30 minutes at the State House before departing without addressing the media. Although the specific agenda remained private, the timing suggests discussions focused on the 2026 budget and constitutional reforms.
The meeting followed recent Ramadan Iftar dinners where Tinubu lobbied lawmakers to prioritize state police. He urged the legislature to amend the constitution to better secure forests and protect citizens from rising insecurity.
Earlier that day, Akpabio addressed the Senate, describing the chamber as a “workshop of solutions” for Nigeria’s challenges. He encouraged citizens to hold their representatives accountable and engage actively in the democratic process.
Legislative focus has shifted heavily toward the 2026 Appropriation Bill, which Akpabio called a “declaration of national intention.”
Committees recently concluded budget defense sessions with various government ministries and agencies to finalize the fiscal plan.
The Senate remains committed to fast-tracking constitutional reviews, particularly regarding the decentralization of the police force. Spokesman Yemi Adaramodu confirmed that the goal is to conclude these amendments before the next election cycle begins.
President Tinubu previously emphasized that any new police structure must include safeguards against political abuse. He insisted that while state police are necessary for security, the law must prevent governors from misusing the power.
