Female sanitation workers across Lagos State were celebrated on Monday with free medical screenings and recognition awards as part of the International Women’s Day (IWD) celebrations organized by the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA).
The event, held at LAWMA’s headquarters in Ijora Olopa, brought together female street sweepers and other sanitation staff to acknowledge their vital role in maintaining environmental cleanliness across the state.
In a statement released on Tuesday via the agency’s social media platforms, LAWMA highlighted the importance of women’s contributions to the operational success of the authority.
“The contributions of women, including our hardworking sweepers, are crucial to the operational success of LAWMA and the sanitation of Lagos communities,” said Gbadegesin, a spokesperson for the agency.
The celebration featured free health screenings and reward packages designed to promote preventive healthcare and enhance the welfare of female sanitation workers.
In a major boost to their wellbeing, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has approved a health insurance policy specifically for street sweepers in the state, ensuring they have access to essential medical care.
The initiative reflects the government’s broader commitment to recognizing the efforts of women in public service and improving the conditions of frontline workers who play a critical role in keeping Lagos clean.
“Today is not just about recognition, but about ensuring our female staff are healthy, motivated, and supported in their vital work,” Gbadegesin added.
The event was met with joy and appreciation by the workers, many of whom expressed gratitude for the recognition and access to healthcare services.
