Suspended Cross River Lawmaker Apologises Over Alleged Assault on Wife

A suspended member of the Cross River State House of Assembly, Ovat Agbor, has publicly apologised to the state government, the legislature and his constituents over the alleged assault on his wife.
Agbor, who represents Obubra I State Constituency, issued the apology in a statement shared on his Facebook page on Monday, days after the Cross River State House of Assembly suspended him indefinitely from legislative activities.
In the statement, the lawmaker expressed regret over the embarrassment the incident may have caused the government and people of Cross River State.
He said he deeply regretted the situation and appealed for understanding from his constituents and the leadership of the state.
“I sincerely apologise to the government and the good people of Cross River State, my colleagues in the Cross River State House of Assembly, and my constituents for the embarrassment that this unfortunate situation may have caused,” Agbor stated.
The embattled lawmaker added that he remains committed to serving his constituency and expressed hope that the situation would be resolved amicably.
Agbor’s apology followed his suspension by the state assembly after allegations surfaced that he assaulted his wife during a domestic dispute. The development sparked public criticism and calls for disciplinary action against the lawmaker.
In response, the assembly moved to suspend him indefinitely pending further review of the matter.
The leadership of the legislature has yet to officially respond to the apology, while advocacy groups have continued to call for accountability and protection against domestic violence.
Agbor was elected to the Cross River State House of Assembly to represent Obubra I State Constituency and has been serving as a member of the current legislative assembly before his suspension.
