Lagos Governor Inaugurates New Electricity Oversight Board for Power Reliability
Lagos State took a key step forward in managing its energy needs on March 9, 2026, when Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu officially launched the board of the Lagos State Electricity Regulatory Commission (LASERC).
The event, held at the Banquet Hall in Lagos House, Ikeja, marks the start of operations for this new body aimed at improving how electricity is handled across the state.
While some early reports suggested the governor signed the related law on the same day, official clarifications confirm the Lagos State Electricity Law 2024 was actually approved back on December 3, 2024.
The Electricity Law 2024 updates Lagos’ rules to match the national Electricity Act of 2023 and recent changes to Nigeria’s constitution. It gives the state more control over its power sector, allowing for better planning and delivery of electricity.
LASERC, as the new regulator, will focus on creating a fair and efficient system that benefits residents and businesses alike. This includes issuing licenses to power companies, setting reasonable prices for services, and safeguarding users from unfair practices.
During the ceremony, board members took oaths of office, committing to their roles in overseeing the sector. Key figures include Alexander Ogunbiyi as non-executive chairman, along with experts in engineering, licensing, and compliance such as Adekunle Olopade and Olakunle Falola.
The setup is designed to encourage competition among providers, which could lead to more stable supplies and lower costs over time.
Experts see this as a positive move for Lagos, a bustling economic hub often plagued by power shortages. By promoting innovations like solar and other clean energy sources, LASERC aims to make electricity more accessible and sustainable.
This could attract more investments and support growth in areas like manufacturing and technology.
Overall, the inauguration highlights Lagos’ push for self-reliance in energy matters. As the board begins work, many hope it will address long-standing issues and deliver noticeable improvements in daily life for millions of people in the state.
Residents are encouraged to stay informed through official channels to understand how these changes might affect their homes and communities.
