Prioritize Public Interest Over Self-Service, Obasanjo Counsels African Leaders

By 𝔸bdulrazak Tomiwa

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has urged African leaders to prioritize their citizens’ interests to ensure continent-wide stability.

He emphasized that true leadership must be rooted in selfless service rather than personal gain.

Obasanjo warned that a growing disconnect between the ruling class and the masses often triggers social unrest. He argued that Africa’s economic and security challenges require accountable and visionary governance.

To compete globally, the former president noted that leaders must focus on building strong institutions over personal enrichment. He stressed that policies should specifically aim to alleviate poverty and empower Africa’s youth.

During his address, Obasanjo underscored the importance of continuity and honouring democratic mandates. He urged current heads of state to focus on leaving lasting legacies for future generations.

He cautioned against the erosion of democratic values, stating that democracy is about more than just holding elections.

For Obasanjo, the real measure of success is the quality of life and protection of human rights.

Emphasizing his core message, Obasanjo stated: “Leadership in Africa must be about the common good. We cannot continue to have leadership that is self-serving while the majority of our people wallow in poverty and despair. The interest of the public must come first in every decision made by those in power.”

He further called for deeper regional integration to tackle shared continental problems effectively. He believes a united Africa prioritizing public welfare would become a formidable global force.

Finally, Obasanjo encouraged the youth to remain politically engaged and demand better from their representatives. He expressed optimism that a shift in leadership philosophy could unlock Africa’s full potential.
