Police Arrest Nine Suspects as Slain Ebonyi Monarch’s Body Recovered

By 𝔸bdulrazak Tomiwa

The Ebonyi State Police Command has confirmed the tragic death of Francis Igwe, the traditional ruler of Ndufu-Alike.

He was the father of the former Deputy Governor of the state, Kelechi Igwe.

The monarch was abducted by kidnappers on Sunday, March 1, 2026, while traveling to a church service. Immediately after the report, police operatives launched an intensive search using technical and intelligence assets.

Security forces initially arrested two suspects believed to be members of the kidnapping syndicate. During interrogation, these suspects confessed that the traditional ruler had been killed just one day after his abduction.

The arrested suspects offered to lead the police to their hideout to recover the monarch’s body. However, as the team approached the location, other gang members opened fire on the officers.

A gun battle ensued as the police responded with superior firepower to overpower the criminals. During the confrontation, one of the hoodlums was neutralized while several others fled the scene.

The operation eventually led to the arrest of seven additional suspects, bringing the total number in custody to nine. A locally made pistol was also recovered during the security raid.

The remains of the slain monarch were successfully recovered from the hideout by the operatives. The body has since been deposited in a morgue for a scheduled autopsy.

Police spokesperson Joshua Ukandu stated that the suspects remain in custody pending further investigation. They will be charged in court once the search for the remaining fleeing gang members is complete.
