Ibom Air Bans Power Banks in Overhead Bins, Checked Luggage

Ibom Air has announced a new restriction prohibiting passengers from placing power banks in overhead bins or checked-in baggage, in compliance with a recent safety directive issued by the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA).

The airline disclosed that the directive takes immediate effect across all its domestic operations, stressing that power banks must now be kept on passengers’ person or stored in carry-on bags placed under the seat in front of them, where they are easily accessible throughout the flight.

According to the NCAA, the measure is aimed at strengthening in-flight safety and reducing the risk associated with lithium-ion batteries commonly used in portable chargers.

Aviation authorities worldwide have expressed concern over incidents involving overheating batteries, which can result in smoke, fire, or what experts describe as “thermal runaway” — a chain reaction capable of igniting intense onboard fires.

Under the new guidelines, power banks are strictly prohibited in checked luggage and must not be stored in overhead compartments.

The regulator explained that keeping such devices within passengers’ reach allows for quicker detection and response in the event of overheating or malfunction.

The directive also reiterates existing battery capacity regulations. Power banks rated up to 100 watt-hours (Wh) are permitted onboard without prior approval.

Devices rated between 100Wh and 160Wh require airline approval before travel, while those exceeding 160Wh are completely banned from aircraft.

Air urged passengers to check the watt-hour rating printed on their devices before heading to the airport to avoid delays or confiscation.

The airline reaffirmed its commitment to complying with regulatory standards and ensuring the safety of passengers and crew.
