Group Alleges Plateau Media Bias Against Fulani Ethnic Group

The group “The Fulani Defenders” has accused Plateau State media of bias, claiming that attacks on herders and cattle rustling are frequently under-reported.
Coordinator, Ahmad Abba stated that the media unfairly profiles the ethnic group as “killers and land grabbers.”
The organization argued that while criminal elements exist in every tribe, the media selectively blames Fulanis for rural violence. They alleged that the press ignores the actions of “Berom Militias” while labeling herders as bandits when they attempt to defend themselves.
Specific figures, including Rev. Ezekiel Dachomo and Barr. Samuel Mwantiri, were accused of spreading propaganda that fuels this profiling. The group claims the media uncritically adopts these narratives, further marginalizing the Fulani community.
The statement clarified that Fulanis are often victims of the same violence they are accused of committing.
They rejected the “unacceptable” trend of universal blame, noting that peace is impossible without acknowledging all sides of the conflict.
The group concluded by pleading for “fair balance” in journalism across the state. They emphasized that impartial reporting is essential to ending ethnic profiling and fostering development in the region.
