President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has waded into the ongoing political friction between the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, and Benue State Governor, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia.
The President urged both leaders to set aside their differences and work together to ensure stability in Benue.
The President’s appeal was delivered by Vice President Kashim Shettima during a strategic summit in Abuja. Tinubu emphasized that internal divisions among key leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) could hinder the state’s progress and the administration’s broader development goals.
Addressing the SGF directly as an elder statesman, the President made a heartfelt request for reconciliation. He stated, “Reach out to our junior brother. Please build Benue together. Benue deserves peace, Benue deserves development.” This message aimed to bridge the gap between the veteran politician and the governor.
The disagreement between the two leaders stems from disputes over political appointments and the control of party structures in the state. These tensions recently escalated with the emergence of parallel party executives during ward congresses, threatening to split the state’s APC chapter.
President Tinubu noted that Nigeria is currently at a critical stage in its growth and cannot afford the distraction of internal party feuds. He stressed that the interests of the people of Benue should be placed above individual political ambitions to foster a united front.
Concluding his message, the President reminded the leaders that their cooperation is essential for regional security and prosperity. He urged them to “mend fences” immediately to prevent the political rift from negatively impacting governance and the lives of the citizens they serve.
