The All Progressives Congress in Edo State on Wednesday successfully conducted its ward congresses across all 192 wards, producing new leaders through a consensus arrangement.
The exercise, held on February 18, 2026, took place simultaneously across the state and was described by party officials as peaceful and orderly.
Speaking at the party secretariat in Benin City, the State Chairman, Jarret Tenebe, accompanied by a delegation from the party’s national secretariat, said the congress marked a major milestone in the party’s growth and consolidation in Edo State.
“The seamless conclusion of the Ward Congresses across the 192 wards of Edo State marks yet another watershed in the political evolution of our dear state.
Today, we celebrate not just the successful conduct of a party exercise, but the reaffirmation of our collective commitment to unity, cohesion, transparency, and inclusivity,” Tenebe stated.
He explained that the National Working Committee of the party had issued detailed guidelines for the conduct of congresses at the ward, local government, and state levels, noting that the directives were strictly adhered to in Edo.
“I am pleased to state unequivocally that those guidelines were implemented strictly and faithfully in Edo State. The result is a process concluded seamlessly, without rancor, without disharmony, and without division among our members,” he added.
Tenebe also referenced the commitment of Governor Monday Okpebholo to mobilise 3.5 million votes in support of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election.
“Our Governor has made a bold commitment to deliver 3.5 million votes in support of our President in the 2027 presidential election. That commitment is not merely symbolic; it is a collective responsibility,” he said.
Addressing the newly elected ward executives, Tenebe stressed the strategic importance of grassroots leadership in strengthening the party’s structure ahead of future elections.
“The ward remains the bedrock of our political structure. It is the closest arm of the party to the grassroots and the electorate who ultimately determine outcomes at both state and national levels,” he said.
He charged the new leaders to deepen engagement within their communities, mobilise members, and ensure that the party’s programmes and policies resonate with the electorate.
The chairman also urged the ward executives to support the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration exercise being conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission, describing it as critical to preparations for the 2027 general elections.
“Accordingly, I charge our newly elected Ward Executives to embark on a massive grassroots mobilization drive to encourage eligible citizens to participate fully in the ongoing INEC registration exercise. Beyond mobilization, you must also sensitize our people on the importance of safeguarding their Permanent Voter Cards. The strength of democracy lies in the ballot, and the ballot begins with registration,” Tenebe said.
He further called for sustained cooperation between ward and local government executives to maintain what he described as the prevailing unity within the party in the state.
