UI Law Faculty Breaks Record with 58 First-Class Graduates

By 𝔸bdulrazak Tomiwa

The University of Ibadan (UI) Law Faculty has recorded an unprecedented achievement, with 58 students graduating with first-class honours for the 2024/2025 session.

This feat involves nearly 40% of the 146-student cohort, sparking widespread celebration across social media platforms.

Former Vice-Chancellor, Professor Idowu Olayinka, confirmed the results following a Senate meeting on February 16, 2026. He noted that the high number of top grades reflects the exceptional quality of students admitted into the faculty, who consistently meet very high entry requirements.

Beyond the 58 first-class recipients, the rest of the class also performed remarkably well. The alumni association revealed that 71 students earned Second Class Upper honours, while only 17 fell into the Second Class Lower category, with no third-class results recorded.

Professor Olayinka defended the results against potential criticism, stating that UI law graduates are “fit for purpose” and historically excel at the Nigerian Law School. He credited the faculty staff for their dedication to bringing out the best in their students.

The UI Law Students’ Society hailed the graduates on X, describing the outcome as a product of “discipline, resilience, and sleepless nights.” They noted that the Class of 2025 has set a new benchmark for scholarly excellence at the institution.

This academic milestone reaffirms the University of Ibadan’s reputation for maintaining rigorous standards.

The achievement is seen as a testament to the institution’s consistent pattern of producing elite legal minds who are ready for the global stage.
