Ramadan: Kano Orders Closure of Event Centres, Entertainment Venues

The Kano State Censorship Board has directed the immediate suspension of operations at all entertainment centres across the state ahead of the Ramadan fast.
The directive affects event centres, popularly known as gala houses, as well as Disc Jockey operators (DJs) and other related entertainment outfits.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the board’s Public Relations Officer, Abdullahi Sani Sulaiman, said the order would take effect from 10:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 18, 2026, and remain in force until the end of the holy month of Ramadan.
“Effective from Wednesday, 18 February 2026, all such venues will remain closed until the end of the holy month of Ramadan. The directive will take effect from 10:00 p.m. on that day,” the statement read.
The board explained that the decision was taken to enable Muslim residents of the state to observe the fasting period in a peaceful and spiritually conducive atmosphere, free from distractions associated with entertainment activities.
It added that the date for reopening the affected centres, particularly in view of the Eid-el-Fitr celebrations, would be announced in due course.
According to the board, the measure is in line with its statutory mandate to regulate and monitor entertainment activities in the state and ensure compliance with existing laws.
The agency called on owners of event centres, DJs, and other stakeholders in the entertainment industry to cooperate fully with the directive and adhere strictly to the regulations.
Kano, a predominantly Muslim state in northern Nigeria, has in previous years implemented similar restrictions during Ramadan as part of efforts to uphold religious observances and public morality.
The board prayed for a peaceful and healthy observance of the holy month and expressed hope that residents would witness the period in mercy and prosperity.
