Kano Begs FG for Intervention over Singer Market Fire

Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf has called on the Federal Government to intervene following a devastating fire at the Singer Market in Kano metropolis which destroyed numerous shops and goods, leaving traders counting heavy losses.

Governor Yusuf visited the market on Saturday while the fire was still raging, describing the situation as “tragic and preventable if adequate resources and preparedness were in place.” In a statement issued through his spokesperson, the governor appealed for modern firefighting equipment, air support, and technical assistance from the federal authorities to help contain the fire and prevent similar incidents in other major commercial centres across the country. "We are calling on the Federal Government to partner with the state to strengthen emergency response and provide modern firefighting facilities. Lives and livelihoods are at stake,” the governor said during his visit. The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) immediately activated a multi-agency response to support the firefighting effort. Teams from the Federal Fire Service, Kano State Fire Service, Nigerian Red Cross, and private firefighting units were deployed to the scene to help contain the flames and prevent further destruction. Thick smoke and intense heat posed significant challenges, but firefighters have worked tirelessly to secure the affected areas. The fire reportedly engulfed a large section of the Singer Market, destroying shops and goods estimated to be worth millions of naira. Traders and market workers were forced to flee as the fire spread rapidly, with many losing their life savings and merchandise. In addition to seeking federal assistance, the Kano State government has announced a ₦100 million relief package to support traders affected by the fire. The state has also approved a ₦3 billion project for road expansion and rehabilitation around the Singer Market, aimed at improving access for emergency vehicles and reducing the risk of future fire outbreaks. Governor Yusuf further pledged to modernize the market with solar lighting, improved infrastructure, and fire safety systems, underscoring the state’s commitment to preventing similar disasters. This incident adds to a growing list of fire outbreaks in Kano metropolis in recent months, highlighting persistent fire safety challenges in major markets. Residents and traders have repeatedly called for better infrastructure, wider access roads, and heightened awareness about fire prevention measures. While authorities continue to assess the full scale of the damage, the governor emphasized that collaboration between state and federal agencies is essential for a robust emergency response and for protecting lives and property.
