The House of Representatives has scheduled an emergency sitting for Tuesday, February 17, 2026.
This urgent session is called to address critical issues arising from the 2027 general election timetable recently released by INEC.
House spokesman Akin Rotimi stated that the session carries “constitutional and national significance.” Lawmakers are particularly focused on the presidential and National Assembly election dates fixed for February 20, 2027.
The internal memorandum from the Speaker’s office notified members of the session. The leadership expects lawmakers to debate legislative matters and potential hurdles connected to the commission’s newly announced schedule.
The agenda includes discussing the timeline for party primaries and voter registration. This meeting highlights the House’s commitment to responding swiftly to developments that impact the country’s democratic stability.
The move comes amidst mounting pressure for further amendments to the Electoral Act. All members are urged to prioritize attendance, as the outcome could significantly shape the legal framework for the 2027 polls.
