First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, on Thursday called on Nigerians to embrace unity and collective responsibility as the foundation for national stability and prosperity, warning that division along cultural and religious lines could undermine the country’s future.
She made the call while accepting an honour at the Leadership Annual Conference and Awards 2025 held in Abuja, where she addressed an audience that included high-ranking government officials, former heads of state, governors, traditional rulers and members of the diplomatic community.
Quoting a biblical maxim, the First Lady stressed the importance of national cohesion.
“The future of our nation depends on our willingness to work together across cultural and religious differences for the good of all. For a house divided against itself cannot stand,” she said.
Mrs Tinubu dedicated the award to Nigerian women, youths and community leaders, whom she described as the backbone of grassroots development and social transformation.
She urged citizens to strengthen bonds of cooperation and mutual respect in order to secure a stable and prosperous future for the country.
She noted that Nigeria’s diversity should serve as a source of strength rather than division, adding that unity of purpose is critical at a time when the nation faces economic and social challenges.
The First Lady also commended the Chairman of Leadership Newspaper, Mrs Zainab Nda-Isaiah, for sustaining and expanding the vision of the organisation’s late founding chairman, Mr Sam Nda-Isaiah.
“I believe that looking down today, he would be proud of you for keeping the fire of this organisation burning,” she said, praising the newspaper’s dedication to journalism that informs, inspires and strengthens democracy.
Mrs Tinubu acknowledged the presence of governors from Imo, Kaduna, Nasarawa, Yobe and Zamfara states, as well as senior federal officials and traditional rulers who graced the event.
She reserved special commendation for the Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations, Dr Amina Mohammed, whose keynote address she described as timely and insightful.
“Your reflections offered practical guidance and clarity on the choices we are called upon to make as a nation,” the First Lady said, applauding Dr Mohammed’s lifelong commitment to Africa’s development and global leadership.
Describing her attendance at the event as personally significant, Mrs Tinubu said the conference provided an opportunity not only to celebrate excellence but also to reaffirm shared national values at the beginning of a new year.
She concluded by dedicating the award to Nigerians who continue to embody compassion, selflessness and service, expressing optimism that with unity and collective effort, the country can overcome its challenges and achieve enduring prosperity.
