Nigeria to Go Fully Digital by 2027 – Bosun Tijani

Nigeria is set to witness a major digital transformation by 2027, as the federal government ramps up efforts to expand digital infrastructure and boost connectivity nationwide, according to Dr. Bosun Tijani, Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy.

Speaking on the government’s digital agenda, Tijani said the plan aims to make digital infrastructure “come alive” by 2027, improving internet access and digital services for millions of Nigerians, particularly in underserved and rural areas. He disclosed that about 20 million Nigerians currently without reliable connectivity are expected to benefit from the initiative. To achieve this, the government is investing heavily in physical infrastructure, including the installation of thousands of new telecom towers and fibre-optic networks. Plans are also underway for the acquisition of two new communication satellites, which will strengthen nationwide coverage and ensure consistent access to digital services. Beyond connectivity, the digital economy is projected to grow significantly, with its contribution to Nigeria’s GDP expected to reach 21 percent by 2027, up from 16–19 percent today. This growth reflects the increasing importance of digital services, fintech, creative tech, and other ICT-driven sectors in the country’s economic development. Tijani also highlighted complementary programs designed to support the digital transformation, such as the Three Million Technical Talent (3MTT) initiative, which seeks to equip millions of Nigerians with technical and digital skills. The government is also advancing the Digital Economy and E-Governance Bill, intended to strengthen legal frameworks for cybersecurity, data protection, and digital public services. The minister emphasized that Nigeria is positioned to become a key digital hub in Africa, with events such as GITEX Nigeria attracting global investment and further fueling the country’s technology ecosystem. The government’s goal is to ensure that by 2027, digital infrastructure is not just a plan on paper, but a living, functional reality accessible to all Nigerians,” Tijani stated
