Enugu State has vaccinated over 1.5 million children against measles and rubella in just one week, hitting 68% of its 2.2 million target.
Dr. Ifeyinwa Ani-Ocheku announced this milestone during a flag-off ceremony at Michael Okpara Square, calling the campaign a “historic” step toward eliminating these diseases.
Emphasizing the state’s commitment to every child’s health, Dr. Ani-Ocheku declared, “We are gathered here today not just for a ceremony but for a declaration. We declare that the life of a child in Nsukka is as valuable as the life of a child in New York. In Enugu, the health of our children is non-negotiable. We declare zero measles and zero rubella in Enugu State.”
The initiative reached communities through schools, religious centers, and house-to-house visits. Representing Governor Peter Mbah, Prof. Chidiebere Onyia described the campaign as a “sacred obligation.” He noted that the state’s economic future depends on the health of the children currently in classrooms and cradles.
Health experts warned that these diseases can cause permanent disabilities like blindness and deafness.
Dr. Ani-Ocheku assured parents that the single-shot vaccine provides safe, double protection. She attributed the high turnout to strong community participation and the effective debunking of medical myths.
With the campaign ending on February 15, officials are pushing to reach the final 32% of eligible children. Health Commissioner Prof. George Ugwu urged parents of children aged nine months to 14 years to utilize the free services. He stressed that 100% coverage is the only way to prevent future outbreaks.
