By 𝔸bdulrazak Tomiwa

A devastating fire broke out late Wednesday night at the historic Kurmi Market in Kano State, destroying at least 80 shops.

The inferno, which started around 10:00 PM, razed goods worth millions of naira, leaving many traders in a state of total despair.

The Kano State Fire Service responded to the scene after receiving an emergency call from a concerned citizen. Firefighters battled the intense flames for several hours, successfully preventing the fire from spreading to hundreds of other closely packed shops within the ancient market.

Saminu Abdullahi, the spokesperson for the Kano State Fire Service, confirmed that while the property damage was extensive, no lives were lost in the incident.

He noted that the quick intervention of the rescue teams was crucial in containing the disaster before it consumed the entire section.

Official statements regarding the cause of the disaster remain pending as investigations continue. Authorities are currently assessing the scene to determine if the outbreak was triggered by an electrical spark, a power surge, or other external factors.

Traders who arrived at the market on Thursday morning were seen weeping as they sifted through the charred remains of their businesses.

Many have called on the state government and wealthy individuals to provide urgent financial relief to help them recover from the massive loss.

Providing an official update on the incident, Saminu Abdullahi stated, “We received a distress call at about 10:00 PM, Over 80 shops were razed by the fire, but our men were able to save hundreds of shops from being destroyed.”
