Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu has deployed the COAS Intervention Battalion to Plateau State.
This elite special forces unit aims to decisively crush the recent spike in terrorist activity. Officials describe the move as a strategic “game changer” for regional stability and public safety.
Brigadier General Senlong Sule received the troops at the 3 Division Headquarters on behalf of Major General Folusho Oyinlola.
The special forces were ordered to be “ruthless” in neutralizing criminal elements during their offensive operations. The GOC praised the Army’s leadership for providing the critical logistics needed for the mission.
The military has urged Plateau residents to remain calm despite the visible influx of troops and heavy hardware.
Major General Oyinlola clarified that the movements were strictly for protection, not to cause alarm. Citizens are encouraged to continue their daily routines as security forces move into high-risk areas.
To ensure victory, the Army is demanding stronger collaboration and “actionable intelligence” from local communities. Real-time information on criminal hideouts is deemed essential for the success of these specialized operations. This synergy is viewed as the only path to achieving lasting peace in the North-Central region.
The deployment follows a series of violent ambushes in areas like Wase Local Government Area earlier this month.
By sending in specialized units, the Nigerian Army intends to regain control from bandits and insurgents. The mission signals a major escalation in the fight against the persistent cycle of regional violence.
Emphasizing the impact of the new unit, the official military statement noted, “The Troops who are already in the State to aggressively and decisively deal with the recent resurgence of terrorists attacks will be a game changer in addressing the threat of insecurity.”
