Suicide Blast Devastates Islamabad Mosque
A suicide bombing at the Khadija Tul Kubra mosque in Islamabad has killed at least 31 people during Friday prayers.
The blast occurred in the Tarlai Kalan area, leaving dozens wounded. It stands as one of the deadliest attacks to strike Pakistan’s capital in recent years.
Defence Minister, Khawaja Asif reported that the attacker opened fire on guards before detonating his explosives inside. The minister noted the bravery of security personnel who attempted to intercept the suspect. He also alleged the perpetrator had recently traveled to and from Afghanistan.
The explosion left the mosque in ruins, with debris and glass covering the prayer hall. Rescue teams and residents scrambled to transport 169 injured people to nearby hospitals. Emergency services remained on high alert as they managed the influx of casualties at medical facilities.
Government leaders swiftly condemned the “cowardly” act of terror against innocent worshippers. Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed deep grief over the loss of life. President Asif Ali Zardari labeled the targeting of civilians a crime against humanity.
International diplomats and religious leaders joined in the condemnation of the bloodshed. Shia leader Raja Abbas Nasir criticized the security breach, stating the incident was not only “a serious failure in protecting human lives but also raises significant questions about the performance of the authorities and law enforcement agencies.”
This tragedy follows a string of recent security challenges in Islamabad, including a bombing last November. The city has now entered a period of mourning with security forces on high alert.
Families continue to wait at hospitals for news while investigators track the militant network responsible.
