Onitsha Main Market Reopens on Monday
The Anambra State Government has announced that the Onitsha Main Market will reopen on Monday, February 2, 2026, following the lapse of its temporary closure ordered by Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo.
The announcement was made in a press statement dated February 1, 2026, and signed by the Commissioner for Information, Law Mefor.
According to the statement, the closure will officially end over the weekend, and traders are expected to resume business activities as usual on Monday.
The government clarified that there is no longer any form of sit-at-home directive on Mondays in Anambra State. It assured Ndi Anambra and residents of adequate security across the state and urged members of the public to report any security concerns through the emergency line 5111.
The statement also reminded civil servants and teachers that the pro-rata salary policy remains in force, noting that failure to report to work on Mondays will attract a “no work, no pay” consequence.
Parents were equally advised to ensure their children attend school on Mondays to avoid sanctions.
The reopening of the Onitsha Main Market is expected to restore full commercial activities in one of the largest trading hubs in the South-East region.
