Adelabu Meets ECN, REA to Boost Local Production of Electricity Components

Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has met with the Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN) and the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) to advance plans for the local production of electricity components, aiming to reduce Nigeria’s dependence on imports and strengthen the country’s power sector.

The meeting focused on promoting domestic manufacturing of critical power infrastructure, including electricity meters, turbines, and other key components, in line with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s broader economic and industrialization agenda. Adelabu emphasized that local production is vital for conserving foreign exchange, lowering operational costs, creating jobs, and ensuring sustainable electricity supply nationwide. Nigeria must take deliberate steps to manufacture its electricity components locally. This will reduce our import burden and help stabilize the power sector,” the minister said. He also called for closer collaboration between ECN and REA, stressing the importance of research, innovation, and data-driven planning in tackling persistent challenges in the electricity sector. Plans were announced to establish a central data pool integrating information from Generation Companies (GenCos), Distribution Companies (DisCos), and other stakeholders to improve sector planning. Adelabu highlighted Nigeria’s untapped hydropower potential, noting over 300 small dams that could support decentralized electricity generation, and encouraged local turbine manufacturing to strengthen hydroelectric capacity. He also urged state governments to play a more active role in power generation, transmission, and distribution. Responding to the minister, ECN Director-General, Dr. Mustapha Abdullahi, pledged the commission’s commitment to support research, innovation, and policy coordination to advance local content and sustainable energy solutions.
