Next Detty December Preparations Starts as FG Targets Better Experience

The Federal Government will begin early planning for the 2026 edition of Nigeria’s end-of-year festivities, popularly known as Detty December, from March, the Minister of Art, Culture and the Creative Economy, Hannatu Musawa, has announced.

Musawa made the disclosure while assessing the 2025 festive season during an interview on the MIC ON podcast hosted by Seun Okinbaloye.

She said although last year’s celebrations recorded strong tourism and economic gains, key shortcomings were identified and must be addressed to sustain Nigeria’s growing reputation as a global holiday destination.

According to the minister, increased tourist arrivals and spending were major positives of the season. However, challenges such as limited accommodation, inflated service charges and heavy traffic posed threats to the overall experience.

She revealed that preparations for the next festive season would begin in March, with a proposal to be presented to the Federal Executive Council to coordinate relevant agencies and stakeholders in delivering a smoother and more attractive celebration period, particularly in Lagos.

Detty December refers to the wave of concerts, cultural festivals, parties and entertainment events that dominate Nigeria’s social calendar at year’s end, with Lagos serving as the primary hub for local and international visitors.

Musawa noted that Lagos has become globally recognised as a December tourism destination but stressed the need to expand festivities to other regions. She said cities such as Calabar, Enugu and parts of Plateau already host December events and will receive increased attention to encourage visitors to explore more parts of the country.

The minister added that the Federal Government plans to strengthen support for Lagos and the creative industry through targeted funding, an endowment scheme for creatives and improved hospitality infrastructure, including more high-end hotels. She also expressed optimism that ongoing airport upgrades and new road projects would enhance visitor experience.

Musawa warned that unchecked pricing by vendors could hurt Nigeria’s appeal and said government intervention would be necessary to ensure fair pricing during future festive seasons.
