Thousands of Flights Cancelled as US Storm Causes Widespread Power Outages

A powerful winter storm is currently sweeping across the United States, bringing a dangerous mix of heavy snow, freezing rain, and record-breaking cold to the eastern two-thirds of the country.

The extreme weather has caused massive travel disruptions, with over 10,000 flights canceled through Monday and thousands more delayed, leaving travelers stranded at major hubs across the nation.

Widespread power outages have struck hundreds of thousands of homes and businesses, with Tennessee, Mississippi, Texas, and Louisiana reporting the highest number of residents left in the dark.

President Donald Trump has approved federal emergency disaster declarations for 12 states, while at least 22 states and the District of Columbia have declared their own states of emergency.

Forecasters have warned of “locally catastrophic impacts” due to significant ice accumulation in the Southeast, which could snap tree limbs and down power lines even after the storm passes.

Tragedy has already been reported in New York City, where local authorities confirmed that at least three people were found dead on the streets due to the brutal weather conditions.

In the wake of the storm, meteorologists expect a record-breaking Arctic cold wave to descend further south, bringing life-threatening wind chills and sub-zero temperatures to millions of Americans.
