Traffic Snarl as Truck Tumbles On Otedola Bridge
Traffic Snarl as Truck Tumbles On Otedola Bridge Traffic movement along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway was severely disrupted in the early hours of Friday morning after a heavy-duty truck overturned on Otedola Bridge, triggering widespread gridlock and delaying thousands of commuters.
The truck reportedly spilled its cargo across a large section of the bridge, blocking nearly 90 percent of the roadway and causing a massive traffic buildup extending toward the Berger axis and nearby routes. The Rapid Response Squad (RRS) of the Lagos State Police Command confirmed that a second accident occurred behind the overturned truck, further worsening congestion and slowing down rescue and clearance operations. In a statement, the RRS said emergency responders were immediately deployed to manage the situation and restore normal traffic flow.
Officials from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), and other security agencies were mobilised to control traffic, secure the scene, and clear debris from the road. As of the time of reporting, no fatalities had been confirmed, though authorities said investigations were ongoing to determine whether any injuries were recorded. Preliminary findings suggest the accident may have been caused by mechanical failure, overspeeding, or loss of control.
The incident has renewed public concerns over safety on Otedola Bridge, a corridor with a history of accidents involving heavy-duty vehicles. Road safety stakeholders have once again called for stricter enforcement of vehicle maintenance standards and traffic regulations to reduce recurring incidents. Motorists have been advised to avoid the Otedola Bridge axis where possible and cooperate with traffic officials as emergency agencies continue efforts to restore normal movement.
