FG Declares National Security Emergencies in High-Risk Areas

The Federal Government has formally declared national security emergencies in vulnerable and high-risk areas across the country, authorising intensified joint security operations and the sustained deployment of forces to priority locations.

Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, disclosed this on the sidelines of the Nigeria–United States security engagement held at the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) in Abuja.

According to the minister, the declaration underscores the government’s resolve to confront evolving security threats and restore peace in communities most affected by violence, insurgency, banditry and other criminal activities.

He said the move would strengthen coordination among security agencies and ensure a more proactive response to threats.

Idris explained that the recent bilateral engagements between Nigeria and the United States reflect a shared commitment to religious freedom, the protection of civilians and respect for human rights.

He added that the partnership also demonstrates a strategic relationship anchored on trust, cooperation and shared responsibility for regional and global security.

“The declaration of security emergencies in high-risk areas is part of a broader strategy to safeguard lives and property while reinforcing Nigeria’s capacity to respond decisively to security challenges,” the minister said.

He noted that discussions during the engagement focused on intelligence sharing, capacity building and support for Nigeria’s ongoing security reforms. Idris assured that the Federal Government remains committed to working with international partners while prioritising the safety and well-being of Nigerians.

The Nigeria–US security engagement is part of ongoing efforts to deepen collaboration in addressing terrorism, violent extremism and other transnational security threats affecting the country and the wider West African region.
