Court Adjourns Trial of Anthony Joshua’s Driver to February 25

A Magistrate Court sitting in Sagamu, Ogun State, has adjourned trial of Adeniyi Kayode, the driver involved in the fatal road accident that claimed the lives of two members of heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua’s team.

The case was adjourned to February 25, 2026, to enable the prosecution conclude its preparation and present witnesses.

Kayode, a 46-year-old commercial driver, was arraigned before the court on January 2, 2026, over the accident that reportedly led to the deaths of Anthony Joshua’s personal trainer, Latif Ayodele, and his strength and conditioning coach, Sina Ghami.

The proceedings are being handled by Magistrate Olufunilayo Somefun.

According to the charge sheet, Kayode is facing a four-count charge bordering on dangerous and reckless driving.

The offences include dangerous driving causing death, contrary to Section 5(1) of the Federal Highway Act, Cap F:135, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004, as applicable in Ogun State.

He was also charged with reckless and negligent driving, contrary to Section 6(1) of the same Act.

The other counts include driving without due care and attention, which allegedly resulted in bodily harm and damage to property, contrary to Section 7(1) of the Act, as well as driving without a valid national driver’s licence, contrary to Section 10(1) of the Federal Highway Act.

At the resumed hearing, the prosecution informed the court that it was still awaiting key documents and witnesses necessary to proceed with the case, prompting the request for an adjournment. The defence did not oppose the application.

Magistrate Somefun subsequently granted the request and adjourned the matter to February 25, 2026, for further hearing.

The tragic incident, which occurred along a major highway in Ogun State, sparked widespread reactions within the sports community and beyond, with tributes pouring in for the deceased members of Anthony Joshua’s team, both of whom were described as dedicated professionals who played significant roles in the boxer’s career.

The court is expected to hear substantive arguments and witness testimonies when the case resumes.
