Any decision on Greenland belongs to Denmark, says UK PM

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has reiterated that the future status of Greenland is a matter exclusively for Denmark and the people of Greenland, amid growing international debate over the Arctic territory’s strategic importance.

Speaking at a press conference at 10 Downing Street on Monday, Starmer stressed the principle of sovereignty and self-determination, stating that the United Kingdom would support Denmark’s position on the issue.

“Any decision about the future status of Greenland belongs to the people of Greenland and the Kingdom of Denmark alone,” the Prime Minister said. “That right is fundamental, and we will support it.”

Starmer’s remarks come at a time of heightened global interest in Greenland due to its geopolitical location, natural resources, and strategic relevance to Arctic security.

The Prime Minister used the briefing to outline the broader direction of the UK’s foreign policy, emphasising a pragmatic and principled approach aimed at protecting British interests while promoting international stability. A full version of his speech was published on the UK government’s website on Monday.

Addressing UK–US relations, Starmer highlighted the depth of cooperation between London and Washington, describing the partnership as critical to Britain’s economic and security interests. He noted that sustained diplomatic engagement had resulted in substantial American investment in the UK.

“Through sustained engagement, we have seen significant US investment into the UK economy, running into the hundreds of billions of pounds, supporting growth, skills and jobs right across the country,” he said.

Beyond economic ties, Starmer underscored close collaboration between the two countries in defence, nuclear capability, and intelligence sharing, describing the relationship as “as close and effective as anywhere in the world,” particularly in the face of rising global security threats.

On international conflicts, the Prime Minister reaffirmed the UK’s commitment to peace and stability. Speaking on the situation in Gaza, Starmer said Britain was open to playing a constructive role in efforts led by US President Donald Trump to sustain the current ceasefire and move discussions forward.

“We are open to participating constructively in efforts to sustain the ceasefire and move on to Phase Two,” he said.

Turning to the war in Ukraine, Starmer expressed strong support for diplomatic efforts aimed at ending the conflict. He acknowledged President Trump’s involvement in pushing for negotiations and said the UK would continue working closely with allies to bring pressure on Russia.

“We strongly support efforts to bring the killing to an end and to secure a ceasefire as soon as possible,” he said. “We recognise President Trump’s role in pushing that process forward, and we will work closely with the United States, Ukraine, and our other allies to apply pressure where it belongs on President Vladimir Putin.”

The Prime Minister concluded by reaffirming the UK’s commitment to international cooperation grounded in respect for sovereignty, security, and shared democratic values.
